Too true. Actually, the win is far more about the way the Patriots (mis-)used their timeouts in the second half than it is about that 4th down call. I think if he’d have had a timeout to burn, he might have won that challenge.

Yeah this is a good start. But I am not looking for you to necessarily spoon feed me the info (though that idea does appeal to me), and that is kind of what this feels like.

Or perhaps I have misunderstood your intent. Because I do think that I could watch the Engadget, Good Gear Guide (news page), Tom’s Hardware, and Tech World sites to get updates on various things.

Perhaps your next post might be able to focus more on sites that contain good subject material for those that want to just stay on top of what’s new in the tech world (whether that be gadgets, games, code, or whatever). Does that help?

I hate it because it is a stupid “cop-out” excuse for someone’s own political agenda. It has little or nothing to do with the children and everything to do with someone satisfying (gratifying?) their own personal needs/desires. And the phrase is using a higher motive – the children – as a means to the end.

I have no idea why it came to me while reading this. Random I guess.

My second thought is related to your statement that “for all its darkness, it’s not as black as parts of my own soul – and thus can lift me up, sometimes. On the other hand, I’ve never even considered having my wife read it – she doesn’t need to know that people can be as dark as Alan Moore, let alone as dark as the characters he’s able to conceive of.”

I believe that Christ had to descend below all in order to be able to help those who had fallen to great depths. I think that your comment illustrates why this was necessary. Your wife has never fallen to great depths, and because of this, has no way to relate to characters who are “as dark as the characters [Alan Moore]‘s able to conceive of.” On the other hand, you have experienced the darkness of humanity, and so you can understand it, sympathize with it, and learn from it.

I think that Watchmen explains an attribute of God far better than any other book I’ve ever heard of. Admittedly, it’s been years since I’ve read any part of the Watchmen, but my memory may serve me well enough that my point may still be valid. Many people ask, “how can there be a God if he allows so much cruelty and pain in the world?” In a lot of ways, Watchmen shows what the world would be like if God noticeably and regularly interfered in the lives of men. Rather than developing a responsibility for their own morality, men would rely on God to change the effects of their actions, and they would do whatever they wanted to, rather than doing what they felt was right.

I don’t really use Information Visualization in my work, so even though I would be interested in reading what you have to say, I probably wouldn’t use anything that you wrote about.

There are libraries supporting Parsing Expression Grammars in most of the languages that I commonly use, so if you can explain them in a way that makes it so that they actually make sense (articles that I’ve read about them don’t make much sense), I would love to learn about them.

I don’t work with PHP much, but I always enjoy good WTF’s so I’d like to see some of those

Data Structures and Algorithms are a weak point in my programming knowledge. I’d like to see a lot about these, including some discussion about when different structures/algorithms are useful.

I’m not too worried about book reviews.

The more I think about it, the more I prefer the second option anyway – it’s more clear that it’s driving at the intended problem, that of “finding the longest prefix which matches” – use the where clause on locate() to say “where it matches”, and the order by+locate to find the “longest”.

I really enjoyed 1632. I’ve tried reading some of Harry Turtledove’s alternative history novels, and I didn’t especially enjoy them. 1632, on the other hand, was excellent.

You raise an excellent point – just because these books ARE available should not stop any of us from purchasing the ones we enjoy! I personally own dead-tree copies of most of the books I’ve linked thus far.

It was very creative, but, I had a hard time caring a whole lot about it.

I also really enjoyed Acts of the Apostles, although the rough patches kind of gave me hives. But hell, I’ve read the thing so many times—about a million—that I’ve lost perspective on it.

Today I’m mailing out copies of my new book, The Pains, which is also available for free download (HTML only, at this point), and in glorious printed book form.

Finally, my second book, the novella Cheap Complex Devices, is available in both PDF and HTML on wetmachine, although there too I hope you’ll consider buying a printed copy, which is the only way I make any money off of writing these things.

Regards,

You almost hit a home run. And then you had to bring up a film that could have been great if not for the most non-emotive actor ever to be cast in a film: Toby Maguire. Seriously!! Show some emotion. Oh yeah, and the first Hulk movie was total crap.

TML:
You didn’t blog on my comment
Err…wait

MG:
what was your post today?

TML:
it was yesterday
it was about equating anti-spoiler people with socialists

MG:
ah
I wasn’t sure which of all the things you clumped together really required addressing.

TML:
lol
None at all
I just thought you might have something to say about it all

MG:
haha
I thought the idea of watching someone play a game would be interesting, except that something like Bioshock would make you sick (First Person Perspective)
You made a remark about spreading the wealth and not trusting others with your hard earned money, but you wouldn’t have the job you do without taxpayer money paving the way for computers

TML:
I also thought it would be good to record especially skilled WoW players

Sent at 3:03 PM on Monday

TML:
No, but I’d have a different job that I enjoyed. Before I started programming for Samaritan, I was making $35/hour as a track-hoe operator
But this sounds like a conversation we should have via BLOG COMMENTS!

MG:
haha

TML:
I’m not saying that government should shut down completely, I’m saying that relying on the Federal government to redistribute wealth seems a bad idea to me.

I like the idea of watching a run through. There are games that I have played before and enjoyed the cinematics. I wouldn’t play them again as that would take way too long but, I would pay to see the cut-scenes. I can also see paying a small amount to see a game I, myself would not be able to beat.

Don’t they make movies (in theater/on dvd) of the games that are too hard to play for yourself?

There’s a reason video games have become a larger industry than Hollywood – the video game industry as a whole demands more quality from every stage involved in the creation of their content – from their writers, to their art direction…even music! Unfortunately, for the most part, when these games have been brought to the “big screen”, the quality has gone back to Hollywood standards.

I agree there are people who will want the “interactive” portion of the experience, but I’m guessing even some of those people might like to see the “high-powered” versions of the games played through – for example, there was a lot of content in the most recent “Metal Gear” games that I have never been able to see simply because I’m just not good enough to get there.

Don’t they make movies (in theater/on dvd) of the games that are too hard to play for yourself?

I think nobody wants to just watch the whole story. Experiencing the story yourself is a good thing too, with or without the help of a walkthrough. I have used walkthroughs for several games, which I usually used whenever I got ‘stuck’ again. I admire your 9h patience, I wouldn’t have been able to try that long, although I like to have the opportunity to try it out myself first. If all fails, I’ll google for a walkthrough, read only the part that guides me through the current situation, and alt-tab back to the game, till I get stuck again.

Fair enough – however, I stopped installing the “Web Developer” toolbar once I really understood Firebug, so it’s nice to know there’s at least one other way to do it.
